Our story

Before any of this existed, our founder Akhil spent about a year and a half driving passengers around this region. Over 2,000 trips, and a rating close to five stars. Mostly, though, it was 2,000 conversations. You hear things in a car that you never hear in a survey.

The same complaints came up week after week. The price jumping when it rained. The car that was three minutes away and then somehow eleven. The driver who cancelled while someone stood outside a clinic with an appointment card in their hand. Nobody was asking for luxury. They were asking to know, in advance, that a car would actually turn up.

Akhil had been writing code since he was a child, and had studied business and worked in data. He could see the shape of the fix. He just could not build it from behind the wheel.

So he built the opposite of what was frustrating everyone.

Wheee is a book-ahead ride service. You book from 45 minutes to 30 days in advance, a real driver is assigned to you before your pickup, and there is no surge pricing. Ever. We cannot come five minutes from now. But we will be there five minutes before you need us.

It turns out that matters most to people whose lives run on a schedule. Nurses on early shifts. Parents doing daycare runs between meetings. Students heading back to the valley on a Sunday night when the trains are bus-replaced and the last mile is a long walk in the dark.

We are based here, and the map is deliberately small: Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast. This is the region Akhil drove, so these are the problems we actually understand. We would rather be genuinely reliable in one region than thinly spread across the country.
